Advanced Bone Regeneration for Lasting Results

A successful dental implant or a healthy facial profile depends entirely on the quality and volume of the underlying jawbone. When bone has thinned due to tooth loss, trauma, or infection, we use specialized grafting procedures to stimulate natural regrowth and prepare your mouth for successful restorative work.

Why Bone Grafting is Essential:

  • Implant Success: Provides the necessary depth and width for titanium implants to fuse securely with your jaw.
  • Sinus Augmentation: For the upper jaw, a "sinus lift" gently elevates the sinus membrane to create space for new bone, ensuring implants don't interfere with your nasal cavities.
  • Preserving Facial Structure: Prevents the "sunken" appearance that often follows significant bone loss after extractions.
  • Ridge Augmentation: Restores the natural contour of your gums and jaw for more aesthetic and comfortable restorations.

Using biocompatible materials and minimally invasive techniques, we focus on a comfortable recovery and a predictable outcome. This essential step ensures that your future dental work is built on a foundation that is as strong and stable as natural bone.

Dental Bone Grafting & Sinus Lifts FAQs

Is there an alternative to bone grafting?

Sometimes. Depending on your anatomy, it may be possible to place shorter or angled implants that use the bone you already have, avoiding a graft. In other cases a bridge or removable option may be appropriate instead. 3D imaging lets us evaluate all of these honestly and recommend the least invasive approach that will produce a durable result.

What should I avoid after the procedure?

Avoid smoking, drinking through straws, forceful spitting, and vigorous rinsing in the early days, since suction and pressure can dislodge the graft. Stick to soft foods, avoid chewing at the site, and do not poke the area with your tongue or fingers. After a sinus lift, also avoid blowing your nose forcefully and sneeze with your mouth open.

Can a graft fail?

Yes, though failure is uncommon. Risk increases with smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, infection at the site, and disturbing the graft during early healing. Smoking is the single biggest modifiable risk factor and we strongly recommend stopping before and after the procedure. If a graft does not take as expected, the site can usually be treated again after healing.

Is bone grafting painful?

The procedure is done with local anesthetic, and sedation is available, so you should not feel pain during treatment. Afterward, expect swelling, bruising, and soreness for several days, generally comparable to having a tooth extracted. We provide medication and detailed aftercare instructions. Most patients find recovery from smaller grafts straightforward, while larger procedures involve a more noticeable adjustment period.

How long does it take to heal before I can get an implant?

Bone grafts generally need several months to mature before an implant can be placed, though the exact timeline depends on the type and size of graft, the site, and your individual healing. Smaller socket preservation grafts typically heal faster than larger ridge augmentations or sinus lifts. We monitor progress with imaging and place the implant once the bone is genuinely ready.

Where does the grafting material come from?

Several sources are used depending on the case: your own bone taken from another site, processed donor bone from a tissue bank, bone of animal origin, or synthetic graft material. Each has different handling characteristics and healing behavior. All materials used are processed and regulated for safety. We will explain which option we recommend for your situation and why.

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift adds bone to the upper jaw in the area beneath the sinus cavity, typically where upper back molars once were. The sinus floor sits low in this region, and after tooth loss there is often not enough vertical bone height for an implant. The procedure gently raises the sinus membrane and places grafting material in the space created underneath.

Why would I need a bone graft?

Jawbone begins to shrink as soon as a tooth is lost, because the bone no longer receives the stimulation the tooth root provided. Dental implants need sufficient bone volume and density to be stable. A graft rebuilds that foundation. Grafting is also used to preserve a socket immediately after extraction, which prevents much of that shrinkage from happening in the first place.
