Avoid smoking, drinking through straws, forceful spitting, and vigorous rinsing in the early days, since suction and pressure can dislodge the graft. Stick to soft foods, avoid chewing at the site, and do not poke the area with your tongue or fingers. After a sinus lift, also avoid blowing your nose forcefully and sneeze with your mouth open.
Yes, though failure is uncommon. Risk increases with smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, infection at the site, and disturbing the graft during early healing. Smoking is the single biggest modifiable risk factor and we strongly recommend stopping before and after the procedure. If a graft does not take as expected, the site can usually be treated again after healing.
